The integration of sensors, computing elements, and actuators in industrial plants allows the evolution of production systems towards the paradigm of Industry 4.0, enabling flexible production models and innovative B2C and B2B services. However, the interconnections and integration of software solutions expose the industrial world to new cybersecurity risks that, previously, significantly affected the IT sector but not the incoming and outgoing production and logistics sector.
Recent cyber attacks have literally brought the production processes of numerous companies to a standstill, causing direct economic losses that go far beyond the damage related to traditional data theft, see for example the case of the chemical-pharmaceutical industry MerRecent cyber attacks have literally brought the production processes of numerous companies to a standstill, causing direct economic losses that go far beyond the damage related to traditional data theft, see for example the case of the chemical-pharmaceutical industry Merck.
The Industria 4.0 Sicura (I4S) project aims to study, design and implement innovative solutions to improve the security and operational robustness of connected production plants and machinery even in the event of cyber attacks. The project will consider both real industrial plants and stand-alone machinery, such as smart devices and products made by a company and sold/installed at their customers.
I4S aims to overcome current imitations of cybersecurity solutions for the industrial world through:
- an IT risk assessment that takes into consideration the technological characteristics of industrial plants and devices, and their interactions with company processes and business objectives;
- the identification of solutions, not only technological, to minimise vulnerabilities that may cause production processes to stop or be damaged, and to improve the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive data used by interconnected machinery and devices;
- The development of solutions that are consistent with local business realities, in terms of company size, turnover and security investment constraints.
CRIT supports the I4S project in the dissemination and exploitation of project results.
The I4S project is co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development (POR FESR 2014 – 2020) and the Fund for Development and Cohesion (FSC).
